GeoDesigns case study – How an interior design and architectural firm uses VR.

Background

Established in 2000, GeoDesigns is a full-service interior design and architectural firm based in India, one of the country’s most recognized names in office interior design services. With its head office in Delhi and branch offices in almost all major cities, its has provided interior and architectural design services to thousands of small and large businesses across the country in sectors as diverse as hospitality, office, retail, IT and several other small, medium and large businesses.

GeoDesign’s interest in using Trezi was a natural extension of its innovative and unique service solutions that are in step with the evolving demands of its clients.

Challenges faced

GeoDesigns wanted to go beyond static visuals and 3d rendering softwares alone to present its design to a client. The challenge was to give the full picture of the designed space, where static visuals would show the views only from a limited number of pre-defined positions.

GeoDesigns, like much of the AEC industry, was looking for a better way of explaining design intent to its client. With Trezi and its use of Virtual Reality (VR) in architecture, GeoDesigns now has a better way to enhance its client’s understanding of space and design intent. The client was able to experience the design through virtual reality architectural walkthroughs and actually contribute to bringing the vision to life.

Being an early adopter

Being an early adopter of Trezi and VR has been advantageous for the GeoDesigns team and gives them an edge over the competition.

“It is certainly advantageous for designers and architects to add the VR to their presentation stack. It is a technology that will get refined further in the future and adopting it early will give professionals a competitive edge. Trezi has helped us get there,” says Dushyant Basson, Senior Designer from GeoDesigns. He also believes that VR is a technology that the AEC industry will be increasingly adopting.

Dushyant says, “For cases where the scale of the project is large, Trezi is quite helpful in visualization. It makes it easier for the client to experience the extent of the large volume of space and how space is getting divided into various sub-zones. In cases of spatial connectivity between the two floors vertically, like a double-height space with some sculptural element, Trezi definitely provides a better visualization when compared to existing models.”

Additionally, he says, “The VR walkthrough was a part of the design presentation and it helped the client perceive the proposed design from any desired viewing angle, compared to the limited number of perspectives in the stills.”

Way going forward

The immersive experience of Trezi, powered by VR, conveys the design intent in an experiential manner; and with the SmartVizX team following an agile methodology of product development, Trezi is slated to improve with every subsequent release. With continuous efforts on the part of VR hardware manufacturers to improve usability and performance of wearable devices, the adoption of immersive technologies for design experiences is set to grow rapidly.

Early use of Trezi has proved invaluable for architects and designers in client presentations as well as in helping clients understand and experience design in real-time collaboration. But it is fast shaping into a platform where they collaborate with their own teams as well as with product manufacturers, a virtual meeting platform for AEC to explore design options, design finalization and product selection.

While we have many plans for Trezi, the immediate benefits that companies such as GeoDesigns gain when they start using Trezi is the time saved in design finalization.

Quick conversion of architectural models from Revit or SketchUp to VR through real-time VR rendering and the ability to create 3D stills, stereoscopic panoramas and provide virtual tours through Trezi leads to very less or zero dependency on outsourced partners for additional visualization work.

So if you are someone who values your time and wants quicker design finalization, Trezi is the product for you.
